The island of Hawaii, or the “Big Island”, is both the youngest and largest of all the Hawaiian islands. It’s home to 5 volcanoes, two of which are still active, so it’s still growing! Because of the sheer size of the volcanoes, visitors can travel trough all but 4 of the world’s different climate zones from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra in just a couple hours or less.

Top Big Island Beaches

The Big Island is home to white, black, and green-sand beaches. Because it’s a relatively new island and the island is so large in comparison, the beaches are further spread out but definitely well worth the drive.

Hapuna Beach
Voted best beach in the U.S. for 2021 by the renowned Dr. Beach, Hapuna Beach is located on the western (“sunny”) Kohala side of the Big Island. The white sands, warm, crystal blue water, and sunny days make this beach an absolute must-see destination for any visitor to the Big Island.

Papakolea Beach
Better known as the green-sand beach, Papakolea Beach is one of the few green beaches in the world (the green is a result of olivine from a cinder cone). It does take a bit of effort to reach the beach, it’s a 2-mile hike or drive along some very rugged terrain. PRO tip: either hike with plenty of water or pay for the shuttle bus to transport you back and from, do not attempt to drive on your own even if you have a 4WD vehicle. The drive is quite harrowing even for an experienced driver.

Punalu’u Beach
The famous black-sand beach on the Big Island (but not the only one), Punalu’u is easily accessible. Although it’s not a “spend the day at the beach” beach, it is definitely worth the visit and you’ll most likely see several sea turtles resting on the sand.
